Ebony pegs Corley a ‘Super Sexy Single’

Ebony pegs Corley a ‘Super Sexy Single’

Ebony magazine named former WAMO deejay Anji Corley as one of the Super Sexy Singles of 2009.

“I first heard about the contest from my publicist at Beckham Media. She suggested that I fill out the application to be a Super Sexy Single. I had initially forgotten about it and one day said let me go ahead and do this...like they say, “Nothing gained, nothing earned.” Then I get a call from the magazine requesting more information, then informing me that I’m a finalist and next thing I know, they are calling me announcing the great news! I was selected as a Super Sexy Single for 2009. I was at the airport and I screamed!”

Corley said it was an honor to be recognized by Ebony magazine. “Yes, it was also a surprise. I know there were thousands and thousands of applicants. I am very confident, but at the same time a very modest woman, I thought ‘What? They choose me?’ It’s challenging not to blush. Friends, family and colleagues are calling me and I laugh when they ask me. I still can’t believe I was selected one of 12 people. Talking about myself and my accomplishments is still somewhat awkward. What made it simple is that this issue was about being single and that is something that my friends—especially all my girlfriends (single and not) talk about quite frequently. So I shared my thoughts on what I would like in a man, interesting relationship stories, deal breakers in men and the ever popular why I believe I’m still a free agent and single. I’m sure my energetic and positive spirit came around in my application.”

She said that the national recognition is overwhelming, and her inbox and network opportunities have quadrupled. “Hey, you never know—I might not be a free agent much longer.”

Being honored with other Super Sexy Singles like Tatyana Ali (“Fresh Prince of Bel Air”) and Lance Riddick (“The Wire”), was also exciting, she said.

Corley gave her views on what being sexy is. “Unfortunately in the article, they didn’t print all of our views on dating in 2009, relationships, what sexy means to me, hilarious dating stories and more. How funny that my first crush was on R&B singer James Ingram. I get asked what sexy means to me and my answer is this...it’s not about the clothes you wear, the swagger in your step or how high your cleavage sets up. Sexy is all about attitude. It’s how you carry yourself and what you project. I feel sexy with a hat on or sweats. Hell, I’ll wear sweats with heels if that’s what I’m feeling that day. I also believe that sexy is how others perceive your vibe. You don’t have to be the loudest in the room, but sexy makes other people want to be next to you naturally. Sexy makes you and others feel well…sexy!”

Her advice for young women entering this type of contest was learning how to take rejection and keep on moving. “I’m used to rejection from auditioning so whatever you do, realize that no one can make or break you. You must always believe in you. I’ll always remember what a great friend of mine told me—25 percent of people will love you, 25 percent of people don’t. The other 25 percent will not know you but will learn to love you and the last 25 percent will be on the fence and not like you no matter what you do. So you have to believe in you. Other people’s opinions shouldn’t matter to you. I believe you should be your own CEO.

She said she would like to thank everyone for their support and love for her endeavors. “I love this city.” Also, if you’d like, e-mail me at anji@ebonysexysingles.com.”
